# The castle quarter is being rebuilt. Is your front door next?

The streets around Elda’s castle are being rebuilt, and the old town is meant to become the centre of the town’s life again. If you own a house there, a renovation is the moment to get the front door right.

Elda’s old town is changing. The town council has started rebuilding the streets that lead up to the castle, Virtudes, Pilares, Sibila de Fortiá and Magdalena Maestre, with a million euros of European funding, turning them into a single level surface that connects with the castle. Calle Independencia and Plaza de San Antón have already reopened after their own remodelling. The stated aim is to make the historic centre the backbone of the town again.

The streets there are narrow, winding and irregular, which is part of their character and part of why the work is needed. If you own one of the houses along them, or are thinking of buying one, the works are a good prompt to think about something smaller: your front door.

## Why a renovation is the moment

Fitting a better door or lock to a house in the middle of a renovation costs a fraction of doing it afterwards. The frame can be reinforced while the plaster is off, the door can be hung properly while the joiner is there, and nobody has to repaint around a new lock.

Leave it until the builders have gone and you are choosing between living with what you have or undoing finished work.

## What to ask for

- **A solid door, properly hung.** Whether it is the original timber door restored or a new one, it must close freely without lifting or pushing. A door that binds wears out any lock.
- **A frame that can take the force.** Old frames in old walls are often the weak point. A reinforced frame or strike plate means a bolt cannot simply be torn through the wood.
- **A good cylinder, fitted flush.** One built to resist snapping, drilling and picking, with a strong handle plate around it. A cylinder that sticks out is an invitation.
- **Keys you control.** At the end of a renovation, every builder, plasterer and electrician may have had a key. Change the cylinder when the work is finished, not before.

## Keeping the character

You do not have to fit a steel door to an old house. A good timber door with a modern lock, a reinforced frame and a well-chosen cylinder can be both secure and right for the street. Old ironwork can often be kept, with the security coming from the lock and the frame behind it.

## While the street is being dug up

During the works, access to some doors will be awkward. If you are shut out while your street is fenced off, say so when you call and give the nearest open corner, the same advice as for [being shut out when the Entrada closes your street](https://locksmithelda.es/blog/the-entrada-has-closed-my-street/).
