Elda or Petrer? Describing an address when the two towns run together

Elda and Petrer have grown into one built-up area of almost 87,000 people. From the street, it is not always clear which town you are in. Here is how to describe your address so help comes straight to you.

On a map, Elda and Petrer are two municipalities with two town halls, two postcodes (03600 and 03610), two castles and two sets of fiestas. On the ground, they are one place. The two towns have grown into each other with no gap, and together they hold almost 87,000 people. Even the railway station is called Elda-Petrer.

For most of daily life, that makes no difference. When you are standing on a dark street at midnight trying to tell someone where you are, it can.

Where it goes wrong

  • The satnav. Typing a street name into a map app can offer you the same or a similar name in the other town. If the person coming to you picks the wrong one, they end up in the right street in the wrong place.
  • Your own assumption. People who have just moved in, or who are visiting a friend, often say “Elda” for anywhere in the built-up area. Petrer residents can be the opposite.
  • Post and paperwork. The town on your rental contract or your letters is right, but you may not have them with you when you are locked out.

How to describe where you are in a minute

  1. Send a WhatsApp location pin. It removes the question entirely and works even if you do not know the street name.
  2. Say the town if you know it, and say so if you do not. “I think it is Petrer” is far more useful than a confident wrong answer.
  3. Give a landmark anyone local would know: a church, a square, the station, a supermarket, a school.
  4. Then the street, number, block and floor.

If your phone is locked inside with your keys, borrow one, and read the street name off the sign on the corner rather than from memory.

Why it matters to us

It does not matter to whether we come: Elda and Petrer are both covered at any hour, and so are Monóvar, Pinoso, Salinas, Novelda, Aspe and Monforte del Cid. It matters to how quickly we reach the right door. A minute spent on the call getting the place right saves a lot more than a minute later.

Two other times the place gets complicated

During Moros y Cristianos, streets in central Elda are closed for the parades; see the guide to being shut out while the Entrada passes. And out in the countryside around both towns, an address can be little more than a partida name and a number, and a location pin is the most reliable way to be found; the finca guide has more on country properties.
